SATOP (Substance Abuse Traffic Offenders Program)
by TRAFFIC SAFETY AWARENESS PROGRAMS
If your driver’s license was seized by the arresting Officer at the time of your DWI arrest and you were suspended by the Department of Revenue (Driver's License Bureau), then State Law requires you to go through the SATOP process in order to get your driver’s license back.
NOTE: You may want to strongly consider coming to SATOP soon after the DWI arrest, instead of waiting until later. We regularly hear students tell us that if they had known previously what they ended up learning in class about how the DWI Court process works, they would have handled Court decisions in a much better way. When people get a DWI for the first time they are cluelessas to what is going on in Court. This is why we strongly recommend you consider doing the SATOP program quickly after the DWI arrest. Mike Richardson's Police background and familiarity with the Court process has helped countless amounts of people understand the Court process.
How SATOP works :
(It is a 2 part process)
#1- A SATOP ASSESSMENT (by a State-qualified SATOP assessor)
This is similar to an Alcoholism assessment but it has some slight differences. The main difference is you will take a DRI test (Drivers Risk Inventory). Also, the assessor will then assign you to ONE of three available programs. The cost for the assessment is $375. 00.
NOTE: All costs, including program costs, are "set” by the State.
#2-A CLASS PROGRAM (You must then attend the program that the assessor assigns you to)
There are four programs that are used for this 2nd part of the SATOP process. You will go to ONLY one program. They are:
LEVEL ONE- OFFENDER EDUCATION PROGRAM (O.E.P.)
This is a 10-hour, 2-day, class. The cost is $130.00.
LEVEL TWO- WEEKEND INTERVENTION PROGRAM (W.I.P.)
This is a 48-hour program, (Friday, 4:00 p.m. to Sunday, 4:00 p.m.)
This is a combination of teaching & small discussion groups.
The cost is $440.52. NOTE: There is State funding available to help you pay for this program.
Funding is based on your household income. BUT, YOU MUST pay at least $250.
LEVEL THREE- CLINICAL INTERVENTION PROGRAM (C.I.P.)
This consists of 50 hours of a combination of discussion group time & one-on-one counseling with a SATOP
trained Alcohol/Drug Counselor. The cost is $1005.91 NOTE: State funding is available for this program.
BUT, YOU MUST pay at least $250.
LEVEL FOUR- INPATIENT TREATMENT CENTER (CSTAR)

All SATOP companies teach basically the same things, BUT WE BELIEVE THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOW THEY HANDLE
THEIR PROGRAMS. The attitude of the instructor of the class, the program Administrator, and the office staff, make a
"night and day” difference in determining whether or not you will enjoy the program & get something from your time spent at
the program. TRAFFIC SAFETY AWARENESS uses ONLY THE BEST instructors, the best equipment, the best films, etc. We care
for the client, and it shows in everything we do.
THE SATOP PROCESS IS REQUIRED BY STATE LAW IN ORDER FOR YOU TO GET YOUR LICENSE BACK from the Department of Revenue
(license bureau) after a DWI arrest. However, if you are unsure of your need to attend the program you may want to consult your attorney or
call the Department of Revenue and ask them. Approximately 95% of all DWIs end up having to go to SATOP.
